In this issue I will cover a few simple techniques for success. There is wisdom in being interested in those around us, showing respect, and asking for input. These simple concepts take years for some to develop, and others never get it. Once learned, usage can make anyone’s job easier. Your employees will be happier and more productive, too. To underscore these points, two stories follow. While military, they have application in our civilian world. By the away, both actually occurred.
• A nephews’ wife was an enlisted soldier in the Army’s legal arm – the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps. She told me there are two kinds of attorneys in JAG: Those that admit they don’t know everything, ask for help, and show appreciation and respect to everyone regardless of rank. She added the few that take that approach are met by a receptive staff that will help those attorneys succeed. The second type she characterized as “Know it all’s.” Those she said make up the majority. They start with an inflated view of their self-worth, act as if their rank means they can do no wrong, and expect to be catered to. In return, she said the staff does what is required of them – and no more. Not surprisingly, the officers in this second category have a tough time, and many fail.
• Another family member graduated from West Point. During that Cadet’s ‘Yearling’ training (their 2nd year) he was learning about Bradley Fighting Vehicles. Regular Army Sergeants doing the instruction approached him after they saw he was interested in learning more than what could be obtained from sitting on the bleachers. They offered: “If one of your soldiers is changing oil in the motor pool, get into the pit with them. Ask how they do their job. Show appreciation for what they do, and take genuine interest in them personally. Treat your soldiers with respect and take care of them. Do that, and your soldiers will help to make certain you succeed.”
