Being new to the company and seeing lots of raw talent, during a meeting I asked the SVPHR about HR certification support. Rather than answer directly, she punted the question to the VPHR of Operations. With all the pomposity and at least some of the physical characteristics of actor Sydney Greenstreet, he bloated up like a toad and snorted those getting certification might expect more salary. If you guessed VPHR ‘Sydney’ was not certified, you would be right. To be fair, the SVPHR expressed financial support for HR certification before that meeting ended.
The point of my story is that industry widely views HR certification as valuable. ‘Sydney’s’ reaction above further underscores that point. Though he saw inescapable value in the education that comes with preparing for certification, I think he was coy about creating an environment in which he may have to compete against others who might become certified.
So, what are some of the reasons for certification:
• Demonstrates credibility and respect to the field
• Enables more advancement opportunities
• Demonstrates commitment to the profession
• Provides competitive advantage and increased earnings potential
• Demonstrates commitment to self-development and the business
• Many job descriptions include certification as a qualifier
• Signifies an expected level of knowledge and skills
